The Korean War: The Story and PhotographPotomac Books Inc. Dulles, United States, 2001. Page: 158.The Korean War is regarded as the first hot battleground for the two great powers in the polarized world. The war that began between North Korea and South Korea has become a force between communism and liberalism. There are many academic texts and books about this period. This book I have reviewed is written by Donald M. Goldstein and Harry J. Maihafer. The title of the book is The Korean War: The Story and Photographs. The book began with the historical process, and the developments in the cold war continued with the reflection of Korea. Finally, they tried to support the war and its influences using visuals. The book consists of ten chapters in total. If I give you general information about the authors of the book, Donald M. Goldstein, Ph.D. (University of Denver), is a professor of public and international affairs at the University of Pittsburgh and a former U.S. Air Force officer. Harry J. Maihafer, a retired U.S. Army colonel and former banker, who lives in Nashville, Tennessee, holds a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri During the Korean War. He served as an infantry platoon Leader and as an aide to the commanding general of the 24th Infantry Division. The first part of the book tells about the history of Korea in general. The history, geography and climate of Korea, its social and economic structure are discussed. In the following sections, historical events between the Korean dynasties and the Japanese empire were mentioned. Korea, due to its strategic position, caused important wars between Russia and Japan. He also described the struggle for independence along with the nationalist movement. Finally, with World War II, it broke down between communism and liberalism. Also in the first part is the life of the founder of North Korea and its relations with Russia. In the second part, Japan’s withdrawal from the region, ideological divisions within the country and the division of the country into the American-Russian equation are explained. In addition, the first phases of the occupation of North Korea by the influence of the Cold War, supported by Russia, and the two groups from the military standpoint are explained statistically. The third chapter begins with the invasion of North Korea. McArthur and Truman policies were described. The military support of the Americas and the United Nations was recorded with pictures and memoirs of the war before and after the war.In the fourth chapter, it is mentioned that the soldiers and the South Korean people are in bad condition as a result of the wars. It has been shown that soldiers are fighting and helping the basic needs of the society. Militarily, the strategic points of the bridge and road reconstruction have been told.In the fifth chapter, General McArthur is based on repelling North Korea with a difficult plan. A liberal South Korea was established under the protection of the United Nations. The text further explains General McArthur’s unification of South Korea and its struggle with communism. In the sixth chapter, it is told that the US has underestimated the Chinese threat and occupied North Korea by crossing the border with a wrong policy. The results of this policy and the defeat of America’s victory were supported by visions. In the seventh chapter, it was told that after China was involved in the war, it changed its policies due to the high losses caused by the United States and the United Nations. In addition, McArthur’s ambition and the most important man of the Korean War, and the details of his dismissal, were also mentioned, especially with the memoirs of soldiers. In the eighth chapter, after the Second World War, America and Russia emphasized the cautious behavior on arms and expressed the geographic and military importance of the weapons used.In the ninth chapter, even if most countries refuse, the communist bloc’s victory over democracy is described. Even if the great battles are over, the ongoing conflicts are told. As these conflicts continued, reconciliation negotiations, such as captive changes, were noted as United Nations agenda. In all this, there was a recent great confrontation and the Communist group made great losses, but it has been shown that Liberal groups are now demanding peace. In the last part, the mathematics of the ending war was calculated. In the United Nations, it is expressed in numbers of what the war is for the countries fighting to defend democracy. It has proved that the war, especially for America, will not allow it to be forgotten even after a long period of time. Therefore, the Korean War is regarded as the first step in the fight against communism for America. Finally, my comments about the book are the following. The book is prepared in an academic manner. Many statistical data have been used in the text and the memoirs of those who have witnessed it have been used. This data, which is regarded as the first hand resource, has enabled us to tell the mentality of the period. In addition, 450 more images were used in the book, each of which proves to be a very important moment and events. The book is very interesting due to its visual use as the language to come. Moreover, the memories increase focus and curiosity. However, the information about weapons in “The Tools of War” section does not attract my personal interest. Therefore, I would like to reduce the number of units and information about weapons in this section. If I comment on the academic literature contribution of the book, it was more interesting in most sections than the other texts I read about it. In addition, the authors did not attach much importance to American forces when describing their military forces, and almost spared the necessary attention to each military unit. They have not been able to examine the troops utopically, and from time to time, they have proved to the point that they need the moral and spiritual support of the military units. The book is a subject to be read by people who are interested in history and especially those who are examining the conflicts of the cold war period. According to the personal interview, although it is an academic text, it is pleasant and informative to read for all levels of the individual. Therefore, it is suitable for academic and personal curiosity.Özlem Dilara Gülta? – 139414003
